CIQ Posts: From Friday 14-10-2011 & Declaration

Due to an issue with blogger (global) it is impossible for individuals to post comments on static pages. Therefore, until further notice, could you please post your CIQ responses as a comment on this post.

The CIQ documents are still accessible on the static CIQ page - it is just the comment option that has disappeared. Just Like Magic.

Thanks!

Dear participant/Student

I would like to ask you to participate in the data collection for a work-based study into the use of an electronic Critical Incident Questionnaire (CIQ).
For the purposes of this work-based study the questionnaire will be used to discover how you are experiencing teaching sessions. Its usefulness is underlined by the experience that student responses often differ markedly from what teachers have expected on the basis of their own feelings in the classroom (Brookfield 1995: 95-96).
The CIQ requires you to answer five questions that describe aspects of teaching sessions, prompting teachers to think about what is helping or hindering their learning so far. Your responses are anonymous and you are encouraged to keep a copy too for review at the end of the course and for your own records. You will be asked to complete the CIQ at the end of each class and are the same every week.

Brookfield began giving students a voice, in this particular way, in the era of carbon paper! But nowadays the facilities available to us include electronic mail and virtual learning environments. Therefore, we will be asking you to submit your electronic CIQ to the specific CIQ page on the course blog.

Your participation in this work-based study is entirely voluntary. Filling in the survey will take no more than 5 minutes. The information you provide is confidential. All of your CIQ responses are anonymous and therefore no participant’s names will be used. If you request confidentiality, beyond anonymised quotes, information you provide will be treated only as a source of background information, alongside literature-based research and potential interviews with other participants.

Your name or any other personal identifying information will not appear in any publications resulting from this study. The information gained from this interview will only be used for the above objectives, will not be used for any other purpose and will not be recorded in excess of what is required for the research.

Even though the study findings will be published in a Thesis, international conferences and journals, only relevant researchers will have access to the anonymous CIQ responses. These researchers will be bound by the principles outlined above. There are no known or anticipated risks to you as a participant in this work-based study.

If you have any questions regarding this study or would like additional information please contact the work-based study researcher (
p.smith7@unimail.derby.ac.uk).

By filling in the CIQ (every occasion) you indicate that you understand its purpose and consent to the use of the data as indicated above. This is a completely voluntary request and should you decide not to complete the CIQ at any point during the work-based study, the data you have already entered up to that point will be used.
Thank you for your cooperation

Paul Smith, University of Derby Research Student

  1. 1. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most engaged with what was happening?

I felt most engaged when we were out on Friday setting up shots and discussing them between ourselves as I am really happy with the way they have come out.

    2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening?

I felt most distanced when we were planning our shoot on Friday before we went out to film as I didn’t fully understand the idea and couldn’t visualise how to shoot it.

    3. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find most affirming and helpful?

I found the tutor helping me around FCP as I am not that familiar with it.

    4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?

The most confusing part for me in the class was deciding on a location to film the interview with the person who’s dream we chose to describe.

    5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)

The quality of the footage from the flipcams surprised me the most as I’ve never used one before and didn’t realise that they work so well.

  2. 1. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most engaged with what was happening?
When we were all working together and planning out a group-filming project as we were all working as a unit rather than on our own.

    2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening?
When I started on my Faux-mo editing as I was putting my footage into order as well as adding the soundtrack to the footage so I had to have my headphones in, in order to make sure that the music matched with my shots.

    3. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find most affirming and helpful?
When Paul showed me how to use Final Cut so that I could make sure the soundtrack that I added would play with my footage, as well as showing me how I can have my sound start progressively.

    4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?
When I originally added my chosen music track into Final Cut it wasn’t playing just making a beeping noise and I didn’t know how to make it stop and I thought that I wouldn’t be able to add music to my footage.

    5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)
How quick it was to put all my footage together and add a soundtrack to it so that it looked like a proper Faux-mo video in such a short amount of time.

  3. 1. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most engaged with what was happening?
whilst filming i felt most engaged due to being in a group full of ideas, we had a good day filming, not stressed or anything, until the flip cams battery ran out...

    2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening?
i felt most distanced during the class when i realised i didnt have enough footage, i have had alot of problems with the camera in the week, somebody has turned the exposure up on the camera and i filmed not realising...so my footage was ruined.

    3. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find most affirming and helpful?
i found it helpful that paul gave us another chance to film a different project, i chose to do that instead of my slo-mo because im finding it a bit difficult to film and so forth.

    4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?

i found it most puzzling when i couldnt remember how to make a clip into a still frame, paul helped me out and i have remembered it too :)

    5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)

i wasnt surprised today at all, we maybe i am because of the level of concentration i had, i felt as if i was in a work mode, maybe because we filmed straight away because it was a set task, if it was left to me i probably wouldnt of done it until the afternoon, i enjoy having a set task,

  4. 1. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most engaged with what was happening?
I felt the most engaged once I had finally got my clips into Final Cut Pro and finally got down to editing my film.

    2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening?
I felt the most distanced from the class when I was waiting for all of the video clips to transfer and had nothing to do.

    3. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find most affirming and helpful? I found Paul going through my assignment brief the most helpful part of the class as it cleared up all queries I had.

    4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?

I didn’t find anything particularly puzzling in today’s lesson as it was all pretty self explanatory and I was simply continuing my previous work.

    5. What about the class this week surprised you the most?.
Watching Richards video surprised me the most, it has given me inspiration to crack on with this editing as I saw how good this piece of work can look.
