CIQ & Declaration

Currently I am in the process of conducting research into effective critical reflection within a media environment. This Research is in conjunction with the Centre for Educational Research, University of Derby.

It is my intention to use Stephen Brookfield's Critical Incident Questionnaire (CIQ) to gain knowledge of individual student perspectives. Therefore, as Media Moving Image students at BSDC you are requested to partake in this research (an excellent attribute you can put in your personal statement).

So what is reflection/critical reflection?

"When we reflect, we not only challenge our assumptions about why we do what we do, we can also help ourselves identify where we feel lacking and why we may be setting ourselves unnecessarily unachievable standards. How can we reflect on our approaches to our practice? What can we do? What can we uncover in the process?" (Hillier, 2005)

"Reflection is not, by definition, critical. It is quite possible to teach reflectively while focusing solely on the nuts and bolts of classroom process. For example, we can reflect about the timing of coffee breaks, whether to use blackboards or flip charts, the advantages of using a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel over previously prepared overheads, or how rigidly we stick to a deadline for the submission of students' assignments. All these decisions rest on assumptions that can be identified and questioned and all of them can be looked at from different perspectives. But these are not, in and of themselves, examples of critical reflection" (Brookfield, 1995)

"To put it briefly, reflection becomes critical when it has two distinctive purposes. The first is to understand how considerations of power undergird, frame, and distort educational processes and interactions. The second is to question assumptions and practices that seem to make our teaching lives easier but actually work against our own best long-term interests." (Brookfield, 1995)

"critical reflection focuses on the hunting of assumptions of power and hegemony. The best way to unearth these assumptions is to look at what we do from as many unfamiliar angles as possible" (Brookfield, 1995)

Please read the guidance notes and speak to Paul about how to complete the CIQ.

Dear participant/Student

I would like to ask you to participate in the data collection for a work-based study into the use of an electronic Critical Incident Questionnaire (CIQ).
For the purposes of this work-based study the questionnaire will be used to discover how you are experiencing teaching sessions. Its usefulness is underlined by the experience that student responses often differ markedly from what teachers have expected on the basis of their own feelings in the classroom (Brookfield 1995: 95-96).

The CIQ requires you to answer five questions that describe aspects of teaching sessions, prompting teachers to think about what is helping or hindering their learning so far. Your responses are anonymous and you are encouraged to keep a copy too for review at the end of the course and for your own records. You will be asked to complete the CIQ at the end of each class and are the same every week.

Brookfield began giving students a voice, in this particular way, in the era of carbon paper! But nowadays the facilities available to us include electronic mail and virtual learning environments. Therefore, we will be asking you to submit your electronic CIQ to the specific CIQ page on the course blog.

Your participation in this work-based study is entirely voluntary. Filling in the survey will take no more than 5 minutes. The information you provide is confidential. All of your CIQ responses are anonymous and therefore no participant’s names will be used. If you request confidentiality, beyond anonymised quotes, information you provide will be treated only as a source of background information, alongside literature-based research and potential interviews with other participants.

Your name or any other personal identifying information will not appear in any publications resulting from this study. The information gained from this interview will only be used for the above objectives, will not be used for any other purpose and will not be recorded in excess of what is required for the research.

Even though the study findings will be published in a Thesis, international conferences and journals, only relevant researchers will have access to the anonymous CIQ responses. These researchers will be bound by the principles outlined above. There are no known or anticipated risks to you as a participant in this work-based study.

If you have any questions regarding this study or would like additional information please contact the work-based study researcher (
p.smith7@unimail.derby.ac.uk).

By filling in the CIQ (every occasion) you indicate that you understand its purpose and consent to the use of the data as indicated above. This is a completely voluntary request and should you decide not to complete the CIQ at any point during the work-based study, the data you have already entered up to that point will be used.
Thank you for your cooperation

Paul Smith, University of Derby Research Student

  1. 1. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most engaged with what was happening?
When we were getting the camera induction and also finding out about the years projects. When vinnie was showing us how to use the cameras was very interesting and I learnt something new.

    2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening?
When we were learning about blogs and other work. I thought it was to much stuff to take In then do it all at once, we could have done it all step by step or made notes.

    3. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find most affirming and helpful?
When Paul was discussing how we didn’t reach last years standards and how we need to improve.

    4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?
When we were in photography none of the work applied to us. None of the information was necessary to our term.

    5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)
That we dont have to hand in paperwork anymore and its all blog based which is a brilliant way to save the planet :D YOU GO GIRL

    1. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most engaged with what was happening?

I felt most engaged when we were looking at the cameras with vinnie, Because I didn’t realize that we could use not ‘as good quality’ cameras and still cameras for our future work.

    2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening?

In the afternoon when we were setting up our blogs, I found myself getting extremely confused- maybe because I was finding it hard to concentrare.

    3. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find most affirming and helpful?

When we had the induction with the cameras, I found it extremely useful as it taught me new things that I did not realize we could do with the still cameras

    4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?
THE BLOGS!! The website is very strange, no simple shortcuts- having to go through a lot of pages to link back to others. If we had of done it in the morning I would have been a lot more alert.

    5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)

That all of our work isn’t paper based, knowing that I haven’t got the hang of this website yet, I know I am going to find it hard to upload and stuff…but on the other hand it is a good idea! Well done!!

  3. Critical Incident Questionnaire

Please take about five minutes to respond to each of the questions below about today’s class. Don’t put your name on the form – your responses are anonymous. When you have finished writing, copy and paste your response to the course blog under the correct sub heading. At the start of next week’s class, I will be sharing the responses with the group. Thanks for taking the time to do this. What you write will help me make the seminars responsive to your concerns.

    1. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most engaged with what was happening?

The Most engaging thing that I felt was happening in the class what learning how to create my new blog, I was also interested in to how I can present my work so easily to my tutor online.

    2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening?

The moment where I was most distance from the class was at the start of the lesson, where I arrived late and the lesson was already in progress but this was a fault of mine because of my absence, and I had to try catch up.

    3. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find most affirming and helpful?

The most helpful thing in class was the demonstration of creating new tabs, but also because of a fault of another student I realized what buttons not to press to get the same result.

    4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?

The thing I found most puzzling in today’s lesson was when Paul was telling us to add our work to Google doc’s but then also asked us to place our reflective learning journals to the blog itself, I found this confusing but he explained further in detail and I got the hang of it.

    5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)

The thing I found most surprising in today’s lesson was when we where being asked to present everything on a digital format and online, never been asked this before it was surprising but im looking forward to see what’s going to happen, also how I can make my work seem more presentable

  4. 1. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most engaged with what was happening?

I became very engaged in discovering how to use blogger and also in the C.I.Q’s, the idea of the C.I.Q was new to me and helped me further understand how to reflect and the meaning of reflection which was a concept I struggled with in my first year.

    2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening?

This week I felt most distanced whilst in Chris’ introduction lesson. It seemed to be the same old point and shoot exercise, which is all good for starting out again, however I felt this activity wasn’t relevant to my course or interests.

    3. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find most affirming and helpful?

Pauls breakdown of the C.I.Qs with practical implications was a big eye opener for me as last year I was unsure as to how reflection could help me personally and saw it as a waste of time. However, Pauls presentation helped me see practical use of reflecting and has most definitely encouraged me to take more time over my reflection.

    4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?

I found the final production of our first module was fairly confusing, I was unsure whether we needed to seamlessly edit everyone’s individual days together or have separate films for each.

    5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)

I found it helpful when the blog was being explained to me again, because its quite complicated.

    4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?

Im still quite ‘puzzled’ about the research that we need to do, I do need it to be explained to me in more depth, because I thought we had to quote from books, websites etc.

    5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)

I didn’t find a lot confusing, just how to get to terms with google docs but this became easier to understand after being shown what to do

    5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)

How easy everything came back to me after being out of film based work for a long period of time but the information never left, just got stored away. :)

  8. 1. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most engaged with what was happening?
I found the Harvard referencing very helpful because I really didn’t understand it but I think Monday will be a lot better for me because we will be doing tasks on it.

    2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening?

Writing up for my treatments, I felt as if I was lacking in concentration. Hopefully this afternoon my concentration levels will be higher.

    3. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find most affirming and helpful?

When paul was talking us through the Harvard referencing system, I feel a lot more confident when I actually do the task on Monday.

that we don’t have to book the cameras out a week before like we had to before, I was surprised we could just book them out on the day.

Today I felt the most engaged when at the start Paul was talking to the year below students about there task, how to film sequences in the films to be similar to your film. And creating a monolog

4.What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?

The most puzzling part of the lesson was when I walked in the lesson and found a student that had left arrived again, this wasn’t explained to me bad point that its screwed up the system but a good thing is that because he is here I have more footage for my project.

    5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)

The thing that surprised me the most was the level of noise from the lorries out side kept distracting me, I don’t normally get distracted easily but I found it hard to concentrate due to the level of volume from the trucks and the fair,

    4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?

Obviously the Harvard referencing system, when we were doing the little task, I found it really stressed towards it because it was so hard to find the actual things we needed.

    5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)

nothing in particular, I realized how hard the Harvard referencing is. I really wish we didn’t have to do it because I feel as if I am going to struggle with it. I am dreading actually going home and putting it into my research.

When I couldn’t work out how to connect the camera, I just wanted to give up, a lot of things went wrong for me and I felt that I couldn’t do it, but then I just needed someone to remind me on how to do it, if I didn’t, I would’ve got really really stressed.

When paul helped me with capturing my footage, to be honest, ive never been good at that part.

    4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?

Nothing in particular, but when I was planning my film homage video, I found it really difficult to actually focus on planning the film, I came up with a good idea but it wasn’t right and I had a mental block.

    5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)
I was surprised in a bad way, when I thought I filmed over the footage we had filmed previous and I found that stressful. I haven’t really been having a good day, and this reflected in my work.

  17. 1. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most engaged with what was happening?

I felt most engaged when we were watching the video examples of the faux slow motion with the class and trying to decide which were fake slow motion and which had been slowed down in post production. I found it interesting to see what can be achieved without jumping straight into post.

    2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening?

The action I found most useful was a thorough and welcoming induction to the course.

When Paul showed me how to upload onto final cut again as I remembered most of the steps but forgot to do the setup.

4.What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?
When trying to think of how to plan everything out so that I wasn’t rushing around at the last minute to do my editing but now I’ve got a plan for everything.

    5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)
How easy I picked up capturing the footage off the camera and onto Final cut as I’d only done it the once and only made one mistake when uploading this time. Hopefully next time I’ll be able to do it without Paul’s help.

Pauls explanation of the Pitch was the most helpful thing that happened to me all day in class, also a chat with Richard about future prospects helped to put things into perspective for me.

    4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?

I felt puzzled by how to present my pitch, however I have come to the conclusion that I will be creating a power point and presenting the pitch myself.

Please take about five minutes to respond to each of the questions below about today’s class. Don’t put your name on the form – your responses are anonymous. Thanks for taking the time to do this. What you write will help me make the seminars responsive to your concerns.
